timeout problems

I have noticed quite a few messages on the archives regarding timeouts. I
tried both an 82557 and 82559 and have the same problem. Intermittant
timeouts. dmesg shows:

eth0: Transmit timed out: status 0050  0000 at 3446815/3446829 command
000c0000.
eth0: Trying to restart the transmitter...
eth0: Transmit timed out: status 0050  0000 at 3466381/3466395 command
000c0000.
eth0: Trying to restart the transmitter...

repeats 4 or so times then comes back alive. Ususally resulting in a
disconnect. Any ideas? I am using the latest module driver from the ftp
site. Also tried an earlier one to no avail.
