good old "transmit timed out" error

I am getting this message and once I get it, the card is basically
hung; can't ping or anything.

I have seen references to this from last year on Yahoo but no answers;
is there any idea what to do about it?

Kernel version is 2.2.11, it is compiled in, single PII CPU, no
multicast support.
