[eepro100] what causes Truncated IP message in tcpdump?

I have just installed the new eepro100 module, including the pci-scan on a
slackware 7 box with 2.2.16 kernel.  However when I run tcpdump on that
interface, I get many packets that say [truncated IP] then specifies a
number of bytes truncated by.  Everything works, but I'm wondering what
causes this to happen and if its hindering performance of the box on the
network.  

All other boxes on the local network work without this problem, however no
other box has the eepro100 NIC.
