Distro Turbolinux Server 6.0.5, kernel (source) 2.2.18 (turbo comes with
2.2.14).
I've retried recompiling the kernel two times, without changes (of course
:).
About your problem, please note that your machine is using aliases (ie,
eth0:1 is an alias): our problem is different (instead of eth0, eth1, eth2,
eth3 my maching thinks there are eth0, eth1 ... eth9).

Cordiali saluti / Best regards
