You can use 'mii-diag' to find the link status:

It's easy to print a label on a chip... The RTL8139 even lets you store the
PCI vendor and device IDs in the EEPROM -- a "custom" board with very little
work.

Good idea!
I'll see if this works with the older compiler versions (my initial tests
indicate that it does).
