RTL8139 "oversized ethernet frame" problem

I have a firewall 486 PC with two RealTek RTL8139 PCI cards. eth0 works fine,
but periodically eth1 fails with lots of messages like "eth1: Oversized
Ethernet frame, status xxxxx", and the interface goes down. Kernel is 2.2.12
using the 1.0.8a driver. Is this a known problem, and is there a fix? If the
problem is a bad card, how do I verify that?
