RTL8139 driver hangs up

I get this too; it is accompanied by "eth2: transmit timeout" on the
console.  I have the driver compiled as a module and unloading and
reloading it fixes the problem.

I can't really upgrade to 2.3 right now, so I've got a script that watches
the console ... :}
