SMC 8423BT transmit problems ???

I bought several SMC 8423BT cards a few days ago - thinking that they
would be better than some of my old NE2K clones ...  

They don't work.  I've tried both 0.89H and 0.90y - the symptoms
are slightly different, but basically it seems to receive packets but
is unable to send.  Well, actually, it will send, but only after 
timing out for 30 seconds or so ... (then a bunch of packets will be
sent, and the adapter will hang up again).  

I notice in the code that this particular adapter has apparently not been
tested for some time, although the users database suggests that they
work.

Are there known issues here - or should I collect as much debugging
info as I can (if the latter it may well take a while, as this is
can't be a high priority for me right now.)
