You did try the driver from http://www.scyld.com/network/tulip.html ?
According to my experience (with a dozen of  SMC1255TX) that one works
(and it does recognize the card as AdmTek Comet, which is appropriate as
that should be the chip on the card if SMC hasn't changed anything
lately). Besides, with more recent 2.4 kernels (e.g. 2.4.18), you get the
support built in.
