Hi,
I have a Linux server on our LAN with 10baseT hubs and about
20 Unix (HP, Sun, SGI) and NT machines.
I have run into trouble several times while trying to tar a *large*
(about 300MB) file sitting at a remote HP host, and tarring to a
hard drive nfs mounted from the Linux server.
Basically, my network gets completely saturated (I used iptrafx to
monitor, and saw transfer rates of 9.5Mbps), and then all my
machines that mount the Linux server disks, freeze.
The only way of reviving it is by logging on to the Linux machine
(which apparently is running fine) and rebooting it.
We have tried waiting for a long time but the tar never comes back
and I cannot access any of the mounted linux drives.
I have a 3Com 3c905B network card on a PII 400 machine
running Red Hat Linux 5.1. I am using the Vortex v0.99E driver.
The relevant messages reported by dmesg on bootup are as follows:
Linux version 2.0.35 (root@porky.redhat.com) (gcc version 2.7.2.3) #1 Tue Jul 14
3:56:39 EDT 1998
kernel: 3c59x.c:v0.99E 5/12/98 Donald Becker
eth0: 3Com 3c905B Cyclone 100baseTx at 0xe400, 00:50:04:05:3a:7d, IRQ 10
I will greatly appreciate any help on this.
Thanks,
Best Regards,
Alok.
