You should without forcing the duplex on the ends.
Forcing full duplex is almost always wrong.

Hmmm, you might be using the modified 3c59x driver in 2.2.14.
Not all of those changes are correct.  Anyway..

If you don't force full duplex you should get a successful negotiation.
I predict that your problems will go away.

This happens when messages are emitted faster than klogd/syslogd can remove
them from the kernel ring buffer.
