Yes, I compiled the driver in kernel (chose 'Y'),
I knew what you meant...however, it looks
like there was another problem...

gave me pause.  I took the card out,
put it back in again, made sure it was
in very firmly, restarted linux, and,
bam, it worked.  It was just a little loose,
that is all.

I feel kind of stupid right now.

Well, live and learn, I guess.  At least I
have learned a bit about where to find the
type of diagnostic information that I might
need in the future, and I know a good place
to ask for help should I have an _actual_
problem some other time.  Thanks very much
for your help, Bogdan, and I promise to 
check the card's seating next time first!!
