you know, i think something i had done before the last vortex-diag i sent
changed things somehow... i had been playing with mii-tool, and/or
modprobing with options... (it was still slow, but i noticed the mii-diag
wasn't complaining about it any more, it was saying 100baseTX half
duplex).  so i did ifdown, rmmod, modprobe, ifup, and:
