Hamachi Promiscuous Mode

On the netatalk mailing list, it is reported for the name binding
protocol to work correctly, the NIC must be in promiscuous
mode. Allegedly, you can do this with:

/sbin/ifconfig eth1 promisc

I did this, but appletalk services still not "seen" on the network.
Does this make sense to anyone? I am now out of my field
of knowledge. I'd appreciate any comments.
