[tulip] Linksys 10/100 Card

Please bear in mind that I'm relatively new to Linux thus some of my
questions may reflect this. Do I need to compile the kernel after loading
the driver package? If I try to use the 'make xconfig', 'make menuconfig' or
'make config' I get the error:
make: *** No rule to make target 'xconfig'. Stop.

Are you actually running the updated driver?
You can check by reading the log with 'dmesg'. The driver puts the version
number into the log even if it doesn't find a supported card.
